Access Gallery was founded in 1991 by a small group of UBC grad students and a local artist, when they were offered unused office space in the downtown core. With the initial support of Vancouver Coastal Health, Gallery Gachet was founded the following year as an artist co-operative by a group of artists whose art practices intersected with therapy.

Both endeavours quickly formalized as gallery spaces, with Access moving into a permanent home in Gastown and Gachet incorporating as a non-profit, both in 1993. Comprising a mini-wave of third generation Vancouver artist-run centres, each gallery would find its footing focusing its energies on providing opportunities for emerging artists.
